They absolutely know it isn’t actual violence. But if enough people cave to their nonsense it’s just another tool in their bag.
These people have control issues and authoritarian tendencies. They will pretend to believe in/disregard anything that advances their position regardless of logical consistency or basic common sense saying otherwise.
Yeah they don't seem to be big on logical consistency do they. Certainly not one of their strengths..
While I completely agree that many people know it's not actual violence, one point I'm not sure I made very well is that I also think there is a subset of the population who *genuinely* believes words are violence just because they have no frame of reference. If the worst thing that's ever happened to them is getting a called a mean name online, they may understand the world through that lens.
Which is OK, I guess. Except that we're letting those people dictate policy, which is entirely unhealthy.
There was a story on NPR this week about people ranting on social media. Some Studies have found that the ranting does no good for the reader/makes no philosophical changes, but it does lots of good for the crier. Maybe people just need to get it out.........
I have my doubts it is even good for the crier. Any validation they receive will encourage more of their whining. Any criticism will bolster their victim complex.
Your writing is lively, potent, and insightful. This is particularly brilliant and hilarious:
"...but in the moment of his murder revealed himself to have all the street smarts of the Star Trek’s fan club president."
LMAO! :) THANK YOU.
Well thanks Katherine, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was originally "The chess club's president" but I thought Star Trek sounded even geekier.

I guess I needed to get out my story about the psycho. I've never really talked about him before, with anyone.
That was not directed at your story!!!! Or you!!!
Enjoyed the article very much. Glad you shared it. 👊🏼👍🏼🤙🏼
Thanks Shane 🤙
