Sadly yes, it is widely ignored. Certain aspects of science have turned into more of a religion than anything. "Trust the science!" Well, actually, real science just tells you what is, not what you should do.
Good stuff. I would say that we can't know whether we've peaked or not until we live some distance past the peak, and I've read some reports that reference people in their 80's saying the last 40 were better than the first 40, so I guess there must be a lot of variability here. What metrics are at play? Surely, to some degree, the metrics change over time? Anyway, nice ruminations.
Thanks Scott! Sorry for the late reply, still moving. The metrics definitely change over time. I certainly don't think "place with cheapest beer" is the best thing in the world anymore. I wonder if people say their last 40 are better than their first 40, just because they have more experience and know what they want out of life and how to get it.
